The Moroccan city of Khemisset is in the Khemisset Province, situated some 80 kilometres from the capital Rabat and about 55 kilometres from Meknes, the former capital of Morocco in the 17th century. In the early part of the 20th century the French built a railway stretching from Rabat to Khemisset, although it fell out of use during World War II and was lifted in 1942. The city has a population of just over 130,000 inhabitants and enjoys a number of sporting venues, including its own racecourse and 18th November Stadium where Ittihad Khemisset Football Club play their home games. Horse racing is administered by the Societe Royale d'Encouragement du Cheval in the same way that the other 6 racecourses in the country are administered.
